Rotary First Harvest
Mike Shanahan
Mike Shanahan my friend and fellow club member of The Rotary Club of the University District passed away Thursday May 18. Mike joined Rotary 40 years ago and was President of my club in 1985-1986. During his career in Rotary he inspired others and lead by example. Mike and Norm Hillis had an idea to provide fresh produce to people in need.
Mike recognized a need and had a solution that inspired thousands of Rotarians to join with him. Please read more about the beginning of Rotary First Harvest. Rotary First Harvest, a program of Rotary District 5030, then went on to become one of the top 100 Rotary projects ever. See the video. At my club when he was promoting Rotary First Harvest, a program of Rotary District 5030 he was simply known as Captain Zucchini.
Mike was the Police Chief of the University of Washington until his retirement. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Mike did what Mike did best; he turned this situation into a way to help others. He produced an exceptional DVD about living with Parkinson’s that was highly regarded and distributed nationally.
Mike was a real hero; I know many of the wonderful things he did for others he did without any of us knowing. When I think of compassion and inspiration I think of Mike. Like a sailboat cutting through glass like water and never leaving a wake. We will all miss Mike so very much and our condolences go out to his wife Jo Anne and his entire family.
Visit the Rotary First Harvest website to learn more about his community service project.
