Matching Grant Information for Rotary Year 2010-2011
The Rotary Foundation (TRF) will begin accepting Matching Grant applications for Rotary Year 2010-2011 on July 1, 2010.
To help clubs turn in their applications to TRF on July 1, D5030 will accept completed grant applications (signed by the President- Elect of the participating clubs) beginning June 1, 2010. Grants will be processed/reviewed in the order in which they are received.
Because of this early review at the district level, your club processes will likely need to begin earlier, before your leadership has officially changed over to the new Rotary year. This is true for the Rotary club in the project country as well as for our D5030 Rotary club…the application needs to be signed by the President-Elect of both clubs. And if the host club’s district is contributing funds, the application will need to be signed by the corresponding District Governor for 2010-2011.
TRF website has a wealth of information about Matching Grants, starting with this page:

Tips for Success
The following tips will help ensure the greatest possible success for your MG application:
Study up before you apply! TRF website above answers lots of questions before you even think to ask them. Read very carefully the Terms and Conditions of Matching Grant Awards at www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/mg_terms_en.pdf
The country coordinator at TRF has very helpful information about particular clubs in project countries and special tips for working in that country. You can search the TRF website for Humanitarian Grants Program Grants Coordinators and the particular country for a complete list of names and contact info. For a list of the Humanitarian Grant Staff go here: http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/hg_staff_sheet.pdf
Have a good relationship with the Rotary club in the Project Country. This is essential before you even consider a MG. This grant is truly a partnership between two Rotary clubs. Be sure the MG application is signed by the President-Elect (or President, if after July 1) of the host club/project country club. Be sure the club with which you’re partnering has provisions in place to oversee the project implementation and evaluation. And, very important, be aware that all outstanding MG’s from both clubs must be current before TRF will consider any new MG’s involving that club. Be sure to check with the Rotary Foundation country coordinator about this before completing your MG request.
Check with D5030 to see how many MG’s are currently under way. Each club can only have 5 Matching Grants open at a time.
Get your completed application in to D5030 on June 1 if possible.
MG applications have increased greatly in recent years, creating a much higher demand for funds. Our D5030 review starting June 1 means your application can be completed and vetted in time for the July 1 TRF submission date. You’ll likely want to create a checklist now of the steps you’ll have to take to have your application ready for D5030 review starting June 1.
Find a mentor. If you’ve never submitted a MG application, there are lots of people in your club or district who can help you. Ask around!
Good luck! Rotary Matching Grants can truly help change the world. Good for you for considering one, and much success!

Other Opportunities
Here is a link to find other clubs in the US that are seeking partners. Although this link has to do with matching grants, it gives you other clubs that may be working on the same projects you are: http://www.matchinggrants.org/how.html

Navy Can Deliver Biosand Filters
One of the items that we have been working with the Navy on is the delivery of pallets of biosand filters to countries being visited by about four deployments. We are identifying needs for these and Rotary clubs that would receive and deploy them in the nations being visited. Some of these countries are fairly poor and can not afford to cover the discounted cost of $1000 needed to cover the cost for a pallet of 15 filters by the 501c3 supplier so we are looking for sponsoring clubs and districts. The beauty of this program is that through our established partnership the Navy will deliver these to our Rotarian colleagues at port side. Also the cost is so low that a small club can afford a good international project for $500 with district matching funds. We can set them up with the receiving club partnership which would need to be in the area of the port to be served as each pallet weighs just over 2000 pounds because of the engineered filter medium that is included. These filters are very effective in removing parasites and reducing bacterial load and really cut the waterborne disease problem. More more information, please contact Leigh Readdy of Northshore Rotary.
Malawi Girls on the Move
Atsikana Pa Ulendo (APU) is dedicated to helping young Malawian women achieve self-sufficiency through education. The Malawi national average for girls who wrote their Junior Certificate exam was 27%. The news received this December that at APU, 100% of the students passed with flying colors!
This is the perfect opportunity for districts in the US and Canada to help “Bridge Continents”. The immediate challenge is to get sponsorship for 40 incoming students. Cost per sponsorship is $1,000 for 1 year and we would like commitment, where possible, to sponsor for the remaining three years.

Rotary Water Matching Grants
George Lewis, the “Water Man” helped put together 31 Rotary Water Matching Grants in the past 4 years! These grants will help 163,000 less fortunate people to have clean drinking water. Because of the new Pilot Program George will now be servicing India. He would like to help your District to partner with a India District in a Water Matching Grant. He will help with all the paperwork, if necessary. He has many good contacts at the DG and DGE level in India. The nice thing is that they donate large sums of money to their Grants. If you have any clubs that might have an interest please have them contact George at: water@rotary5030.org.
