We the middle class in each of my countries are doing very well indeed. We live in fine houses. We drive nice cars. We send our children to good schools. Yet, as the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer we, in the middle, are crying about our economic state.

Three days in Kerala - "God’s own country," they say and surely my own choice as the loveliest state in India. A lush land of abundant agricultural bounty - coconuts, bananas, rice in the coastal lowlands; teak and rubber plantations in the mid-ranges; cardamom and pepper and tea in the high ranges. Green everywhere.

I’ve so many friends here – many of whom I consider my India family. So I take time on this journey – in a comfortable air-conditioned compartment – to think about friends and family here in the first two weeks of my 26th return.

It was more than sixty-six years ago that I first came to India, and not until more than five years later that I made my first return. In January 1942 we first came to the land which has become my home. We came – a very frightened mother with three little children.

A new scholarship program has been started at the Second Session School at Christ the King School in Jhansi. Emerald City Rotary has contributed US$1000 to fund this scholarship, which will pay the ongoing educational expenses at the school of their choice of one boy and one girl from Class Five (the top class in our Second Session School).

At The Indian Christian Mission Centre in Salem, Tamil Nadu, we have just begun testing all 2000 children and 500 staff for HIV/AIDS. One of the first to test positive is the girl I have sponsored for several years.

I’ve been in India for two weeks now. Nearly four days of that time has been spent in comfortable travel on India’s trains. I’ve attended the installation meetings for Rotary clubs in Meerut and Jhansi.
